What does it mean to be placed in foster care?

Foster care is a temporary living situation for kids whose parents cannot take care of them and whose need for care has come to the attention of child welfare agency staff. While in foster care, children may live with relatives, foster families or in group facilities.

On any given day, there are nearly 424,000 children in foster care in the United States. In 2019, over 672,000 children spent time in U.S. foster care. On average, children remain in state care for over a year and a half, and five percent of children in foster care have languished there for five or more years.

The State of Georgia has approximately 11,921 children in foster care as of August 2021. Children in DFCS custody can be placed in kinship homes, foster homes, adoptive homes, private agencies, or group homes.
